Methane hydrate and shale gas are predicted to have substantial reserves, far beyond the sum of other fossil fuels. Using methane instead crude oil as a building block is, thus, very attractive strategy for synthesizing valuable chemicals. Because is so inert, its direct conversion needs high activation energy typically requires harsh reaction conditions or strong oxidants. Photocatalysis, which employs photons operated under mild conditions, promising technology reduce thermodynamic barrier in avoid common issues overoxidation catalyst deactivation. In this Review, we cover development photocatalysts co-catalysts, including use inorganic materials polymeric semiconductors, explain how batch flow systems affects kinetics product selectivity. We also discuss efforts understand underlying mechanisms from both photophysical chemical perspective. Finally, present our view challenges facing field suggest potential solutions. Methane, replacement oil, can be converted into chemicals through photocatalysis. This Review discusses design photocatalytic strategies their outlines most pressing questions still field.
